Carla Labarrère and Sarah Crawford, co-founders and organizers of Tox on Tap Saskatoon

ToT aims to demystify scientific research for the general public and empower non-scientists to more comfortably and accurately assess science and technology issues, particularly those that stem from toxicological impacts in the environment.

Tox On Tap (ToT) is a non-profit organization run by volunteer organizers and speakers. ToT serves as a public science initiative in Saskatoon that aims to bring the public and scientific community together in an informal setting to discuss current environmental and human toxicology issues. ToT was started in Saskatoon in 2013 by Sarah Crawford and Carla Labarrère, two graduate students in the Toxicology Centre at the University of Saskatchewan. Their goal was to create an environment that provided fellow students with an opportunity to not only discuss toxicology issues with scientists but to interact and inform the public of current science that may be important to the community.

Since then, the torch has been passed, and ToT is currently organized by toxicology graduate students Derek Green, Larry D'Silva, and Erin Maloney as co-organizers along with many volunteers who help to set up the venue and document the night!

Tox on Tap is based on the French Cafe Philosophique model, Café Scientifique. It is a place where anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science. Originating in England, the concept quickly gained popularity and was taken to other countries. Similar but independent events have arisen in many cities using variations of the Café Sci or Science Café name. Meetings have taken place in cafes, bars, restaurants and even theatres, but always outside a traditional academic context. The events are known for their informal and friendly atmosphere, and are believed to improve the image of scientists and careers in science.
